Meeting the Miniaturization and Manufacturing Requirements of Today’s Optical Filters for Next-Generation Point of Care Devices

The Point of Care (PoC) device market is growing rapidly and not just because of the effects of the recent pandemic.

These instruments have various uses in medical diagnostics, including the detection of infectious diseases, testing hemoglobin levels and monitoring blood glucose levels. They are a popular choice for these types of tests as they only require a single drop of blood, saliva, or urine and can be performed by a GP within minutes.

These various demands have impacted the medical instrumentation market and there is a clear demand for portable, small and robust instrumentation. To achieve this, the medical industry needs miniaturized, fast and low-cost diagnostic PoC devices. These devices must match the optical performance of their larger counterparts. What’s more, OEMs are also demanding high-volume manufacturing at a low cost to compete in the growing PoC instrumentation market.

Optical filters from Delta Optical Thin Film

We work closely with our customers, helping them to optimize their optical systems across a broad range of applications. This includes the PoC instrument market, where we supply small custom optical filters. These often have specialized designs to reduce the effects of the large angles found in PoC instruments and polarization splitting.

The development of all-dielectric ultra-hard coatings for optical bandpass filters was hugely beneficial as the coatings exhibit outstanding long-term environmental stability. These coatings also provide the highest level of spectral discrimination. Our ultra-hard coated filters are suitable for applications in a range of environments, without adversely affecting performance levels.
