High-tech company Trumpf has acquired an eighty-percent stake in Active Fiber Systems GmbH (AFS), a company based in Jena, Germany, that specializes in fiber lasers. AFS develops and manufactures ultrashort-pulse laser systems and fiber-laser systems used primarily in science and research. In addition to basic research, its areas of application include the generation of extremely short-wavelength light with high coherence, biomedical imaging and material processing.

As a majority stakeholder in AFS, the Ditzingen-based group – whose holding’s managing company just changed its legal form and now operates under the name Trumpf SE + Co. KG – hopes to leverage synergies in the research and further development of its existing ultrashort-pulse laser portfolio and to expand its business in this growing field.
Founded in Jena in 2009, Active Fiber Systems has a workforce of 37 employees. Both parties have agreed not to disclose details about the transaction.
