ABB robots paint art car

Abstract artwork by Advait Kolarkar and geometric motifs by digital design collective Illusorr are featured on Car From Flood Disaster

ABB's award-winning PixelPaint technology perfectly recreated Advait's vibrant designs and Illusorr's three-color geometric motifs—all without human involvement in the painting process.

Equipped with 1,000 nozzles in the paint applicator, ABB's IRB 5500 painting robots took less than 30 minutes to complete the complex artworks. PixelPaint technology enables unprecedented precision and speed, capable of recreating minute details that would be impossible to create manually. You can see a short video about the art car here.

ABB's innovative PixelPaint technology is revolutionizing the painting process and is the answer to a growing demand for sustainably produced and personalized vehicles in the automotive industry, especially in the area of customized body painting. Multicolor vehicle painting is usually a laborious and expensive process that requires multiple masking and unmasking. ABB's technology, on the other hand, enables detailed, multicolored and exact reproduction of any design. The paint is carefully dosed and quickly applied in a single painting process. ABB's groundbreaking technology is a breakthrough in body painting automation and opens the door to customized designs in the automotive market.

PixelPaint technology also contributes to a more sustainable production, as no masking material or additional ventilation is required. In this way, emissions can be reduced and water and energy can be saved. Programmed with ABB RobotStudio software, the paint applicator travels close to the body surface to ensure 100 percent of the paint is applied without creating excess paint mist (overspray). In this way, different colors can be quickly applied in a single painting process. This halves throughput times and vehicle manufacturers can save up to 60 percent of the costs.

For the art car, ABB used a prepared Volkswagen SUV that had been damaged in the flood disaster in Germany in the summer of 2021.
