According to Baumer, the EB260 magnetic ring encoder is as precise as an optical encoder. How does the EB260 achieve this precision?

The basis is the measuring scale, i.e. the magnetic ring on which the magnetic graduation is applied. Here, Baumer relies on magnetic materials that have a high degree of homogeneity and also enable a high flux density. The high-precision magnetization on specially developed magnetization systems is achieved through the use of innovative correction processes. This effectively minimizes errors and produces magnetic rings of the highest quality. The sensor detects the magnetization without contact and achieves the highest signal quality, not least thanks to Baumer LowHarmonics technology.

What exactly does Baumer LowHarmonics signal conditioning do and what advantages does it offer?

Baumer LowHarmonics technology comprises several continuously operating signal processing algorithms. They ensure a speed signal with an extremely low harmonic content, regardless of the distance between the sensor and rotor. In addition, typical errors caused by signal drift, assembly tolerances, temperature fluctuations or shaft runout, for example, are effectively eliminated. This results in considerable advantages in drive technology, for example: Bearingless encoders with LowHarmonics are immune to shaft currents and ball bearing wear. They enable more compact and reliable motors with significantly reduced system costs.

How can system costs be reduced?

Firstly, expensive accessories such as shaft couplings, torque arms, mounting brackets, insulating sleeves or additional covers are no longer required. In addition, the requirements for the customer's mechanics are significantly reduced: Previously, high requirements for shaft concentricity and axial play were necessary to ensure the accuracy and reliability of encoders. The EB260 bearingless encoders with LowHarmonics operate with high precision even with large radial and axial tolerances of several millimetres, thus reducing the costs of the design.

The encoders themselves are also simpler in design: the encapsulated electronics do not require any complex sealing measures. Precise mechanical components and special ball bearings as well as complex alignment and calibration procedures are also eliminated. LowHarmonics thus offers a unique combination of high precision, maximum cost efficiency and superior reliability.

There is a wide variety of classic incremental encoders on the market. How easy is it to integrate the innovative bearingless EB260 into existing automation environments?

The EB260 can be flexibly integrated into existing automation environments thanks to its extensive parameterization options. The integrated IO-Link interface enables seamless integration into control architectures from various manufacturers. Alternatively, the Baumer USB-C IO-Link master with the intuitive Baumer Sensor Suite software ensures particularly easy and convenient commissioning. Resolution, direction of rotation and signal level (HTL/TTL) are individually adjustable, as are functions for air gap, speed and temperature monitoring.

So the EB260 also offers functions for condition monitoring?

Yes, in addition to the integrated motion monitor, the EB260 also provides valuable secondary data for condition monitoring functions. The Airgap Monitor continuously monitors the air gap and provides information on mechanical changes. In addition, temperature monitoring enables early detection of critical operating states. The EB260 thus supports Industry 4.0 applications, provides valuable insights for big data analyses and optimizes predictive maintenance.
