Camera Interface: GenICam 2.2 Standard Released

First established in 2006, the GenICam standard continues to release enhancements in response to an ever-growing user-base. "The release of GenICam 2.2 and its support for the Mac OS X," notes Dr. Fritz Dierks, chair of the GenICam committee, "is a prime example of how our technical committee is responding to user interest and demand."

With this latest release, the GenICam standard now provides support for all major operating systems: Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. "With GenICam being used more widely," says Dr. Dierks, "we were bound to see its adoption under the Mac OS X. I think this will open up the door for an entirely new segment of GenICam users."

One such type of user is the academic researcher. "Researchers worldwide rely heavily on our products to accelerate the pace of discovery, innovation, and development," says Alan Hwang, a product manager at MathWorks. "Since Macs are used frequently in scientific research, we hope to broaden the use of GenICam among research communities by being a major contributor in this latest release."

About GenICam
The goal of the GenICam standard is to provide a generic programming interface for all kinds of cameras. No matter what interface technology (GigE Vision, Camera Link, 1394 DCAM, USB, etc.) is being used or what features are implemented, the application programming interface (API) should be always the same.
The GenICam standard is hosted by the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA). Today, more than 90 companies from all over the world are part of the GenICam initiative. More information about the GenICam 2.2 standard is available at www.genicam.org.
