The basics and terms of industrial machine vision are updated

The series of guidelines VDI / VDE / VDMA 2632 Part 1 has been published as a draft. Its aim is to support users and solution providers in the implementation of the projects. Suggestions for improvement can be submitted immediately.

An essential factor for the success of the project is a common understanding between user and provider of requirements, framework conditions and the performance of the image processing system to be provided - right from the start of the project. Misunderstandings due to vague terms and ambiguities increase the implementation effort or even jeopardize the success of the project.

The aim of the revision of sheet 1 was to present the technical terminology more clearly and understandably: Definitions of terms were made more precise and any ambiguities resolved. The terminology around the interplay of lighting, scene and camera system was revised and clearly visualized. The “Image evaluation” section is completely new. So far, for example, the terms “reference pattern”, “boundary pattern” and “ideal pattern” have been used rather intuitively - a risk of misunderstanding. Clarification has now been made here.

Developing a powerful classifier and configuring it in a targeted manner is a core competency in image processing. Capturing the performance of a classifier in practice and describing it using key figures is another. For all users who do not work with classification and misclassification rates, pseudo error rates and allocation rates on a daily basis, the new edition of VDI / VDE / VDMA 2632 sheet 1 is a valuable reference aid, because it summarizes the terms commonly used to evaluate a classification performance .

The professional world is now called upon to carefully examine the draft. Suggestions for improvement can be submitted until December 31, 2021 by objection via www.vdi.de/2632-1 so that the final guideline becomes recognized state of the art again for the next few years.
