Trumpf acquires a majority stake in fiber-laser specialists AFS
Active Fiber Systems and Trumpf target synergy effects in research and to further expand their companies' market shares. Trumpf plans to retain and expand the location in Jena, Germany, and the independence of the research-oriented company even after the takeover as majority stakeholder.
High-tech company Trumpf has acquired an eighty-percent stake in Active Fiber Systems GmbH (AFS), a company based in Jena, Germany, that specializes in fiber lasers. AFS develops and manufactures ultrashort-pulse laser systems and fiber-laser systems used primarily in science and research. In addition to basic research, its areas of application include the generation of extremely short-wavelength light with high coherence, biomedical imaging and material processing.

As a majority stakeholder in AFS, the Ditzingen-based group – whose holding’s managing company just changed its legal form and now operates under the name Trumpf SE + Co. KG – hopes to leverage synergies in the research and further development of its existing ultrashort-pulse laser portfolio and to expand its business in this growing field.
Founded in Jena in 2009, Active Fiber Systems has a workforce of 37 employees. Both parties have agreed not to disclose details about the transaction.
