Physik Instrumente grows by 27 percent in fiscal 2021

Specialist for high-precision motion systems and piezo technology

21.04.2022 - Physik Instrumente achieved a 27 percent increase in sales in fiscal year 2021. The Karlsruhe-based company also started 2022 with the highest order intake in the company's history.

With sales of 243 million euros, Physik Instrumente (PI) achieved growth of around 27 percent in fiscal year 2021. "Our decision last year to invest in expanding our capacities despite all the uncertainties caused by the pandemic has proven to be the only right one," sums up Managing Director Markus Spanner.

In fiscal year 2021, PI invested more than 5 million euros in production in Germany, significantly increasing capacity. In the same period, 170 additional jobs were created. "In 2022, we will continue to expand our capacities and create new jobs at all levels," adds Spanner.

PI order intake increases by 62 percent

Order intake grew by 62 percent to more than 320 million euros. "Corona has accelerated the megatrends of digitalization and health enormously and permanently to an extent that has surprised all market participants - including us," explains Spanner. However, supply chains remain strained in the third year of the pandemic, leading to supply shortages across the industry.

PI produces components and modules for high-precision movements in the range of up to millionths of a millimeter at its German sites in Karlsruhe, Eschbach and Rosenheim, as well as piezoceramic components in Lederhose, Thuringia.

Acquisition of Precision Granite and expansion in the USA and Asia

With the acquisition of the Japanese company Precision Granite W Co. Ltd. completed in February 2021, PI is expanding its technology portfolio to include precision granite for machine beds and measurement assemblies.

"Asia and the U.S. are among the largest markets for our Semiconductor Manufacturing, Photonics, Life Sciences and Industrial Automation segments, which is why we are also expanding our presence there, including local development and manufacturing," announces Spanner, adding, "We expect PI to continue to grow in all segments in fiscal 2022 and beyond."
