Point Grey: Compact and Cost-Effective Cameras

Advanced CCD and CMOS digital cameras for machine vision

16.08.2011 - Point Grey designs, manufactures and distributes IEEE-1394 (FireWire), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and Camera Link cameras. The company has a strong network of distributors worldwide and a wholly-owned German subsidiary that provides sales and support services to customers in Europe, Africa and Israel. Recently, the camera manufacturer introduced new products which we like to present here.

Flea3 - the world's smallest GigE Vision cameras

The new Flea3 GigE camera series sets a new industry standard with an ultra-compact size of just 29 x 29 x 30 mm, making it the world's smallest Gigabit Ethernet camera. The first available models use monochrome and color versions of the popular Sony® ICX445 CCD, a high sensitivity 1.3 megapixel 1/3-inch EXview HAD image sensor that runs at 30 FPS. The Flea3 offers superior imaging performance, unbeatable price-performance, and a host of new features, including opto-isolated GPIO for industrial triggering and strobe output, non-volatile flash memory for user data storage, and on-camera frame buffer.

Grasshopper2 -  1.4 MP FireWire camera doubles frame rates and reduces noise

The next-generation Grasshopper2 camera uses the exceptionally sensitive Sony® ICX285 2/3" EXview HAD CCD and a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter to generate high quality 1.4 megapixel images at 30 FPS - double the rate of the previous Grasshopper. The Grasshopper2 GS2-FW, measuring just 44 x 29 x 58 mm in size, offers new features such as opto-isolated GPIO for industrial triggering and strobe output, and optimized performance imaging modes. Every Grasshopper2 GS2-FW camera is equipped with a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter, 32 MByte frame buffer, 512 KByte non-volatile flash memory, and on-board temperature and power sensors to monitor camera status.

Chameleon - 1.3MP CCD, USB 2.0 interface, compact size

With a unique combination of high sensitivity 1.3 MP Sony EXview HAD CCDTM running at 18 FPS, hi-speed USB 2.0 digital interface, and ultra-compact size, the Chameleon camera is an ideal choice for demanding imaging applications such as object and gesture tracking, test and measurement, security, and biometrics. The camera is equipped with a CS-mount lens holder with removable glass/IR filter system, and is housed in a small and lightweight 25.5 x 41 x 44 mm case. A 7-pin GPIO connector can be used to synchronize the camera to external devices, and an FPGA controls all camera functionality, including gain, exposure, gamma, and more.

Gazelle - High-Speed Camera Series with CMOSIS 2 and 4 MP Sensors

The Gazelle camera  featuring 2.2 and 4.1 MP monochrome models is based on the high sensitivity CMOSIS CMV2000 and CMV4000 global shutter CMOS sensors. With a Camera Link digital interface in Base (2-tap) and Full (8-tap) configurations, the 2.2 megapixel model outputs 2048x1088 resolution images at a maximum rate of 280 FPS, while the 4.1 megapixel model outputs 2048x2048 images at 150 FPS. The Gazelle features the same compact housing as Point Grey's popular Grasshopper camera, which measures just 44 x 29 x 58 mm in size.
