Better accuracy in 3D image processing

Chromasens has introduced an advanced 3D reconstruction method for its CS-3D API (Application Programming Interface) library that integrators can use to create, deploy, and deploy reconstructions. The new SGM algorithm is an alternative to the conventional block matching (BM) method that was previously used in Chromasens 3D stereo cameras to match corresponding pixels between two images.

The main difference between the two methods is how the adjustment costs (energy) are calculated. For BM, the costs are calculated with normalized cross-correlation, while SGM uses a specialized census transformation. As a result, prior knowledge of a surface structure can be included, making the SGM algorithm more accurate when generating 3D point clouds, better identifying object boundaries and reconstructing fine structures and poorly structured terrain without artifacts.
