Welding with Civan's Ultrafast CBC-Laser: Basics, Opportunities and Challenges

Monday, 16 January 2023, 2pm CET | 8am EDT

Novel technologies such as high-tech components for electromotive applications result in new challenges in manufacturing and in particular in joining technologies. These range from joining of dissimilar materials over crack- and pore-free welding of novel alloys to ultra-high-speed welding of large parts.

The unique beam shaping technology of CIVAN's Coherent Beam Combining (CBC) laser enables the generation of beam shapes with arbitrary variation of the intensity distribution on the workpiece. In addition, it is possible to switch between these shapes at MHz frequencies. This offers great potential for influencing and controlling laser welding processes.

The first part of the webinar will provide an overview of the fundamentals and challenges of the welding process and the features of the CIVAN CBC laser. The second part of the webinar will discuss approaches to take advantage of fast, arbitrary beam shaping to control process problems.

Key learnings:

  • Laser welding of challenging materials
  • Benefit of Fast Laser Beam Shaping
  • Approach for solving e-mobility joining issues

Prof. Dr. Rudolf Weber

University of Stuttgart, Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW)

Prof. Dr. Weber received his PhD in 1988 at the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) of the University of Bern on the subject of "X-ray emission from laser-generated plasmas". In the following years, he headed the research groups "Diode-Pumped Solid-State Lasers" and "Laser Material Processing" at the IAP. He then moved to industry, where he became managing director of engineering companies that developed laser sources and laser systems.

Since 2008, he is lecturer at the University of Stuttgart and head of the business unit "process development" at the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW). In 2017, he habilitated on the topic "Process parameters for industrial laser applications and their impact on the design of processing systems".
