Efficient quality control through VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 guidelines
15.08.2025 - The series of guidelines is intended to become a common technical basis for providers and users of machine vision projects.
Industrial image processing plays a crucial role in precise quality control and increasing efficiency in production processes, often supported by artificial intelligence (AI). VDMA and VDI have been working together successfully for a decade to promote these standards. Industrial image processing systems, also known as machine vision, use digital cameras to capture and computer-aided evaluation of images to check the quality of products. These systems can be used not only for non-destructive testing, but also for contactless measurement of geometries or to determine the position of components.
The use of AI and machine learning is expanding the range of tasks that can be solved with industrial image processing. AI can offer solutions that were previously impossible, especially for products with a wide variety of variants or variable operating conditions on site. A good/bad decision by the vision system prevents the delivery of defective products and can indicate plant drift at an early stage. Close coordination between suppliers and users is crucial to exploiting the full potential of image processing.
The VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 guidelines support this communication by describing the basics and procedures for the acceptance of image processing systems. The VDMA recognizes the benefits of these guidelines and recommends them to its members in the mechanical and plant engineering industry. As a co-sponsor of the series of guidelines, the VDMA presents them on various platforms. The continuous adaptation of the guidelines to technological progress, especially in the field of AI, ensures their relevance in the future.
